Position Description
Based at University of California, Davis, within the Department of Plant Sciences, at the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Horticulture (also referred to as the
Horticulture Innovation Lab), this entry-level position supports applied horticulture research for improved livelihoods in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central America. Our global research network works with and promotes local leadership to advance horticulture and social innovations, empowering smallholder farmers to earn more income while better nourishing their communities.

This entry-level position will be a key member of the management team. The program officer will play an important role in the management and administration of the Horticulture Innovation Lab and its international projects. They will work under supervision to monitor project progress, communicate with international collaborators, and ensure compliance with USAID and UC Davis guidelines. The program officer will assist in achieving programmatic goals by coordinating meetings, collecting data, drafting reports, and responding to administrative tasks assigned by USAID. They will also play a role in monitoring and evaluating the impact of the Horticulture Innovation Lab program.

Event coordination of, at times, international meetings or conferences, including travel logistics and expense reconciliation, will be part of their responsibilities. Additionally, they will support reporting, outreach, and communication efforts by drafting blogs, white papers, reports, presentations, and social media content.

The program officer will also assist with office operations and routine tasks. They will assist with logistical and operational needs, including facility coordination and maintenance of the Demonstration Center. The Demonstration Center is an outdoor learning space displaying postharvest technologies and horticulture production zones that the Horticulture Innovation Lab manages. The program officer will also play a leadership role in the Horticulture Innovation Lab’s DryCard entrepreneur project.

We are looking for a self-starter that is excited to contribute to the overall mission of the Horticulture Innovation Lab. Recognizing this is an entry-level position, ideally this person will be familiar with international development, agricultural concepts, equity in food systems, and working within and with academic organizations.

Join Our Team
Our UC Davis team is joined by our regional hub managers based in Nepal, Ghana, Kenya, and Honduras, and our US-based gender, nutrition, and youth specialists. Working cross-culturally is a must, with often early or late zoom calls to accommodate other time zones. 

Work Environment
We are eager supporters of work-life balance and support hybrid work plans, although being in the office at UC Davis is occasionally required. International travel is occasionally required.
The position requires that the program officer lives in California.
