This video shares the story of Akwi Suzan, a site coordinator and farmer in eastern Uganda. She farms a plot of land under irrigation, and uses it to demonstrate irrigation technology to other women farmers near Aloet, Uganda, as part of a research project led by Kate Scow of the University of California, Davis.

"Naturally, women are busy. You find that a woman wakes up in the morning, wakes children up, prepares them, goes to the garden. You come back from the garden, the cooking is waiting for you. It takes most of their time trying to look for ways of survival." –Akwi Suzan

The project uses a participatory research and development approach to test irrigation innovations at sites in eastern Uganda and create a framework for local public- and private-sector organizations to develop small-scale irrigation systems. These activities build on the team’s previous participatory work in Uganda convening stakeholders to develop innovations in small-scale, dry-season vegetable production for women farmers.
