Marco Wopereis is director general of the World Vegetable Center and is based in Taiwan. The World Vegetable Center conducts research and training to raise awareness of the role of vegetables for improved health and global poverty alleviation. Wopereis is an agronomist with expertise in agricultural science and management. He previously served as deputy director general of the Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) in Benin. He has also worked for the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) in France, International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) in Togo, the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA, now AfricaRice) in Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire and for the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines. He holds a doctorate in tropical agronomy, as well as master’s and bachelor’s degrees in soil science, from Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
