This category of vegetables is sometimes referenced with a variety of different names, including African indigenous vegetables (AIVs), African leafy vegetables, and traditional vegetables.

The Horticulture Innovation Lab's research related to African indigenous vegetables has generally focused on leafy greens, most frequently vegetable amaranth, African nightshade, spiderplant, and sometimes moringa.
