Proposal process: Organizations
Please note: We are not currently seeking project proposals from organizations for Trellis. The most recent deadline was Jan. 18, 2016. The documents and other details below are for information only. If you would like to make sure to hear of our next call for project proposals, you may want to consider signing up for our email list.
Organizations in developing countries are invited to submit a project proposal that addresses a horticultural problem facing local farmers, which would also include the involvement of a graduate student consultant. The maximum funding available for each project is $2,000, with funding available for 15 projects. The deadline to submit proposals is Jan. 18, 2016.
Proposals from organizations in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nepal, Rwanda, Senegal, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia will be considered. Organizations with 50 or fewer staff members will receive priority. Please note that proposals may be declined due to security concerns.
A complete project proposal will include intended objectives, activities, graduate student engagement, gender program, a plan for monitoring and evaluation, staff resumes, and a $2,000 budget for consideration. Successful applicants will be paired with a U.S. graduate student with relevant technical expertise.
Timeline:
- Project proposals due: Jan. 18, 2016
- Funding decisions by: April 29, 2016
- Funding available: Jan. 1, 2017
- Six-month projects must be completed by: Dec. 31, 2017

Student recruitment process: Graduate student applications
Please note: We are not currently seeking student applications for Trellis Fund projects. The original deadline was Nov. 4, 2016. That deadline was extended for student applications to three specific projects until Nov. 15, 2016 at noon PST. The documents and other details below are for information only.
Graduate students are invited to participate in new Trellis Fund projects. Selected students will work remotely with an organization as consultants on projects for a minimum of 100 hours and also travel for approximately 2 weeks of in-country work. Students will be provided air travel; reimbursement for lodging, visas and vaccines; and a $300 fellowship upon completion.
Students from the Horticulture Innovation Lab's four partner institutions are eligible to apply:
- UC Davis
- North Carolina State University
- University of Florida
- University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa
